What are the types of Hair transplant ?

Generally there are two types of Hair transplant techniques :

1.  FUT : Also known as Follicular Unit Transplant is a surgical procedure where hair is harvested from the permanent zone (back and side of scalp) where hair is more impervious to thinning and grafted to thinning, balding or bald area of scalp. In this    procedure a strip of scalp is removed and each individual follicular unit is    separated  (1-4 hairs) and grafted.
2.  FUE : Also known as  Follicular unit Extraction is a minimally invasive hair restoration surgery which uses advance technology to track and extract hair follicle with precise accuracy and control and each individual follicles are     transplanted in thinning, balding or bald area of the scalp. It is also suitable for     the patients who does not want linear scar which will happen on FUT, or who     patients who want to take hair from different parts of the body rather than scalp.

What are the risks of Hair transplant ?

Hair transplant surgery is normally safe procedure when performed by qualified, experienced board certified plastic surgeon. Still individuals vary greatly in their physical reactions and healing abilities.  Excessive bleeding and/or wide scar caused by tension can cause stretch-back scars especially n FUT, Some of the graft won’t take. Like every surgical procedure chances of infection is always there, though it can be minimised with antibiotics and proper dressings.

What are the preparation required for Hair transplant ?

Firstly a full consultation with board certified plastic surgeon is required where every aspect of surgical procedure will be explained. Marking for hair line and donor site will be discussed and marked. Counselling will be done about the possibilities of the outcome and patients will be suggested to take a 0 blade trim of the hairs in the donor site and take a full shower as after the surgical procedure shower cannot be taken for few days. Then counselling will be done on the healing aspect after the hair transplant surgery.

What to expect during recovery from Hair transplant?

Mild swelling of the scalp and peri orbital region can be expected. Slight bruising can be expected.

In FUT Since follicular unit transplants imitates the way hair grows in nature, the results, in expert hands, will look totally normal and be indistinguishable from one’s original hair. Donor site will have linear scar and stitches which can be taken out in few days. After healing it will be covered by the hair and will not be visible. Regular dressing must be done of donor site.

New hair growth starts about 3-4 months after the procedure. By 6 months, around half of the newly transplanted hair starts to grow, and by 9 months, almost 80% of the hair grafts will be growing. By 12-18 months, the regions where hair loss once occurred will be filled in with thicker and fuller hair, leaving patients excited about their results.

In FUE On the first day following the procedure, small scabs the size of a pinhead surrounding the transplanted hair follicles may become noticeable. These scabs typically go away in 7 to 10 days.

Patients can expect the donor site at the back of the head return to normal in about 7 to 10 days after the operation.A few weeks after surgery, the transplanted follicles enter a resting phase that lasts for 3 to 4 months, and the original hair will fall out to make way for new, healthy hair.

FUE VS FUT ?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) are often compared as if they are two completely different, even competing, hair transplant procedures. Despite this common misconception, the difference between FUE and FUT is the way by which follicular units are removed from the donor region in the back and sides of the scalp. The rest of the hair transplant procedure is basically the same, and the results will appear similar.

However, the harvesting method does have important implications for the hair restoration procedure as it will affect the total number of high quality grafts that can be harvested from the donor region and therefore, the fullness achieved from the hair transplant. In general, the harvesting method of FUT via strip is superior to that of FUE for two main reasons. The first reason is that the FUT procedure allows the doctor to produce the highest quality grafts by isolating the follicle units with minimal trauma. The second is that FUT enables the doctor to best utilize the most permanent part of the donor region. While the FUT (“strip method”) procedure produces wonderful results, the FUE procedure is sometimes preferred by patients because it is minimally invasive as it does not involve a scalpel or stitches, nor does it leave any noticeable linear scars at the back of the scalp.

Because the differences between FUE and FUT are significant, the pros and cons of FUE hair transplant surgery should be considered when deciding which procedure is best for you.
